Tasmanian Derby 2011 Nominations

January 31st, 2011

Twelve three-year-old gallopers make up the 2011 Tasmanian Derby nominations, the Group 3 showdown set to light up the Hobart Racetrack this Saturday, February 5.

The first Group-status race of the 2011 Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival, the $150,000 Tasmanian Derby is a testing 2200m event that was won by Geegees Blackflash last year.

This year the Lee Freedman-trained filly Ludka is the clear favourite to become the 2011 Tasmanian Derby winner.

Coming off three straight wins, Ludka most recently won the Hobart Guineas (2100m) at the Elwick track on January 23 making her the obvious runner to back through Luxbet in their Tasmanian Derby betting markets.

Tiger Won’t Tell, Tommy Young’s improving Hold That Tiger gelding that ran a gallant second to Ludka in the Hobart Guineas last start from a wide barrier and with a heavy weight, has also been nominated for the Tasmanian Derby on Saturday.

The other early pick for the 2011 Tasmanian Derby is Moe-based galloper Mourinho.

The Oratorio gelding scored an impressive four length victory at Moonee Valley in a 2040m handicap on December 31, but failed and finished dead last at Flemington on January 22.

Connections are hoping Mourinho will return to form with a strong performance in the Derby.

Punters should also keep an eye on the field, form and odds for other Tasmanian Derby entries including Hobart Guineas fourth placegetter Rose Of Scotland, Heez Born Lucky a winner of their past two starts in Victoria and Charlie Goggin’s promising gelding Ben Annalou.
