Peter GelagotisMourinho has won the 2011 Tasmanian Derby on Saturday February 5, 2011.

Mourinho paid $3.80 at Luxbet for the win.

Mourinho won the 2011 Tasmanian Derby at Tattersall’s Park on a dead track to claim his share of the $150,000 prize money on offer.

The three-year-old gelding was ridden by jockey Anthony Darmanin to a commanding lead in the final straight after he accelerated at the home turn.

Mourinho won the Group 3 Tasmanian Derby by nearly three lengths, beating runner up Heez Born Lucky and third place getter Jay Bee’s Gee Gee.

Peter Gelagotis, who trains Mourinho, was very impressed with his horse’s convincing win and now plans to send him to Melbourne to contest some of the Spring Racing Carnival titles.

“This is my biggest win in racing and my first Group race.

“He will make a great Country Cups horse and he may even win a good race during the Spring Carnival in Melbourne,” Mr Gelagotis said.

Mourinho now has a win percentage of 50% and has taken his career earnings to an impressive $150,000.

Lee Freedman’s Ludka started as favourite but was unable to stay the distance, finishing a disappointing fourth.

Ludka’s jockey Steven King thinks the three-year-old filly is in need of a spell.

“I’m not certain but she may have had enough this preparation,” he said.

Heez Born Lucky did well to finish second after a hard run that left him last at the home turn and Tiger Won’t Tell finished fourth after being the victim of interference at the 500 metre mark.
