Darren Weir has claimed plenty of staying success through the last 12 months and will saddle Tasmanian Derby favourite Howard Be Thy Name ($2.20) who leads the market ahead of local hope Jerilderie Letter ($2.30).

Will Howard Be Thy Name justify favouritism and win the 2016 Tasmanian Derby or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?

Jerilderie Letter ($2.30)

Jerilderie Letter has returned to racing in exceptional form this time, is a black type winner at staying distances and will be very hard to beat in the Tasmanian Derby from barrier 2. Posting five wins and a minor through six starts so far, the Bushranger gelding returned this time for third in the Hesketh McCrimmon Insurance Cup (1200m) on December 9th and has since taken out each of his three subsequent starts including both the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) and Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) most recently.

Howard Be Thy Name ($2.20)

Howard Be Thy Name is yet to finish outside the first three through his six start career so far but will make his black type debut in the Tasmanian Derby and is not trialled at the distance competitively. Placing third in each of his first three starts through late spring, the Redoute’s Choice colt placed second in each of the Crt Whites Rural Maiden Plate (1533m) and Grand Hotel Frankston Maiden (1400m) before taking out the Porter Plant Maiden Plate (1600m) last time out on January 27th.

Al Shameel ($6.50)

Al Shameel is a proven performer in Tasmania, has returned to racing in great condition this time and has reportedly taken plenty of benefit from his most recent run for second in the Hobart Guineas. Claiming one win and five minors through eight career starts, the Zabeel gelding placed second in the Fashion Awards Australia Plate (1400m) on December 13th; progressing to second in each of the Npd Natural Gypsum BM64 (1400m) and Joan Alma Garlick Memorial Plate (1875m) leading into the Hobart Guineas.
