Northwest Passage demolished a handy field to win the Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) last week and has been included in 2017 Tasmanian Derby nominations.

Northwest Passage has only made four appearances at the races since he made his debut in late November, but has more than stamped himself as one to watch in posted three wins and a minor.

Taking out each of the Sharpe Legal & Convey Maiden (1300m) and #TheRaces BM64 (1900m) with ease at his first two starts, the So You Think gelding was beaten in the late stages of a Randwick minor over 1800m after leading, but returned to winning form in the best way possible at Hobart last time out.

Darren Weir saddled subsequent Group 1 winner Howard Be Thy Name in this race in 2016 and has included Igitur in 2017 Tasmanian Derby nominations.

Igitur has shown plenty of ability through his eleven career starts so far, but was unable to figure at his most recent appearance and will be seeking to build off the effort on Friday.

Undoubtedly at his best when he broke through for a maiden race win in the Two Tarts Maiden Plate (2100m) at Echuca on December 19th, the Helmet colt has clearly been looking for a step up in distance at his two most recent appearances and will relish the 2200m of the Tasmania Derby 2017.

The 2017 Tasmanian Derby field is set to be dominated by mainland raiders, with the likes of Danny O’Brien, Patrick Payne and Mick Price all submitting nominations for the race.

Several exciting local prospects have been included in Tasmanian Derby nominations, including Trusted Warrior.

Having clearly improved on each occasion that he has stepped up in distance, Trusted Warrior finished sixth in the Armidale Stud Trophy (1400m) on December 21st and has since placed fifth in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) and third in the Hobart Guineas.

The 2017 Tasmanian Derby field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday (February 1st).
